Résumé de la thèse

The security sector of Myanmar is at an important turning point since the political development of the military coup on February 1, 2021. The shifting political dynamics and the roles of the major actor have ensured the importance to studythe development of the security sector reform under the federal democratic principles. This thesis is based on the research question of how Myanmar can establish an army and a military structure in line with federal democratic principles and what there is to learn from similar reform efforts in other countries. The research will study a part of security sector reform: the federal military structure and security sector management and oversight under the federal democratic principles with an attempt the develop a working model of federal military structure and civilian and parliamentary security management and oversight. The rationale for the focus of the research specifically on the army is enrooted within the critical role of federal army in the envisioned future of establishing a federal union of Myanmar and the need to transform the decades of political dominance, bamanisation of Myanmar Tatmadaw, and oppression of other ethnic groups.
