Résumé de la thèse

Democratic culture, given its free institutions, often includes different religious, moral and

philosophical conceptions of the good life. In the context of international migration, these

differences have intensified, eroding the unity of the nation with the state. This research

project focuses on the problem of social cohesion in a context of international migration.

The two dominant contemporary approaches to social cohesion, civic patriotism and liberal

nationalism, ground the state’s social cohesion on ‘civic’ and ‘national cultural’ allegiance,

respectively. This project examines their weaknesses and strengths in conceiving social

cohesion through analyzing Jürgen Habermas’s civic patriotism and David Miller’s liberal

nationalism.

There is an emerging approach to social cohesion that scholars such as Seyla Benhabib and

Philip Pettit have started to develop. I call this third school ‘democratic interculturality’ and

hope to develop it into a full-fledged political theory of social cohesion in my dissertation.

Normatively, this scheme establishes a more robust democratic interaction between co-

citizens than that provided by liberal principles as in civic patriotism. At the same time, it also

is willing to respect different identity affiliations of the citizens –even those falling outside of

the national culture, and there by distances itself from liberal nationalism.
